Don't use anything gloss.

It stands out. Try use a satin finish to blend in invisibly.

A satin finish EXTERIOR polyurethane would be best. Polyurethane is a plastic anyway...
Minwax "Helmsman" Spar Urethane comes in a satin finish and protects against UV and weather, should be good. It's water based too. I'd use that before a true varnish, which is oil based and more aggressive. The thinners in an oil base product like varnish could damage the plastic, not sure it would though. Just make sure it's an exterior finish if you want protection from UV light. Any "spar" finish will be exterior. A spar is a horizontal support for a sail...
