It is good to have backups, because you never know what happens to
many web sites and their contents (even on SourceForge some evil
project maintainer might delete stuff, and if nobody else notices and
requests a backup restore from SourceForge, it could theoretically
disappear for good). Well for NitrOS-9 it is not so important because
so many of us have cloned the repository :)

But if backup is the goal, just back it up and do not publish it
before the original site has disappeared. You wouldn't keep working on
a backup copy of your documents either, would you?
