I'll ask you a simple question first. Have you tried pressing the 
<SCROLL LOCK> key? That, since a year or more ago, has been the way to 
change XMESS' mode so that you can access other options.

(If this is confusing, wait until I sober up. I'll try to correct it 
then. ;) )
