At least now you are beyond the fumbling around and crawling 
stage. Motorola licensed several alternate vendors for teh basic 
6845 CRTC desing. MOS Tek and Synertek were among two. It 
seems that there were a few vendors that decided to add t heir own 
little caveats to the basic design. Even the Motorola MC6845-1 has 
some "improvements" over the MC6845 original design.
