For this particular application, where I2C is being used, an 8-pin MCU
would be enough, and I don't think speed is of terrible importance here,
since the CoCo itself needs time to boot (at 1MHz).

The particular AVR I was referencing (the ATtiny11) has a speed of 6 MHz
with its internal oscillator, I believe. It's also $0.54 US in single
quantities. It does require a high-voltage (12V) programming mode, but at
that price, it might be worth it. No in-system programming, though.
