Isn't an L1 driver simpler than an L2?  L2 drivers have to deal with the 
memory mapping and copy their buffers to/from user's own buffer space.  And 
probably hew to some extra rules thanks to the memory management.

So I'd think you could get an L1 driver by deleting stuff out of an L2.  
Could be wrong, way wrong, though.

Sorry, my 6809 assembler skills are really rusty.  And one thing I never did 
get to under OS9 was messing with device drivers.  --Mike K.
