[Papyrus-L] jumping ship

RE: [Papyrus-L] Future PapyrusYesterday I migrated to Endnote 4.
Following the wise advice of my fellow Pap-ers I filled up the holes in my data base with dummy references before the big move, and, sure enough, the Pap reference number came up as Endnote's Record Number.

Then I organised the columns in the Endnote library window so the first one is the original Pap #. New additions to the library are incorporated in sequency, which means that my file cabinet full of Pap-numbered hard copies and my cherished filing system are preserved (!).

I should mention that when I last closed the Pap window, I was wished "good luck". I'm sure it knew I was jumping ship.

Dave, if that Windows version ever gets to see the light, I will be among the first ones to come back.

Cheers,

Carlos Caceres

  Hi Carlos

If you import your Papyrus references into Endnote (using the recommended import/export formats, which worked nicely for every one of my 24,000 references), the Papyrus number is imported to a field called "Label". But you cannot have Endnote automatically increment that Label field thereafter, so you will have to adopt a new system for identifying your references in an Endnote world. (Endnote does have its own auto number, but there is no way of editing it, or importing data to it). Not entirely satisfactory, but maybe the best of a bad lot.

For what it is worth, I think i might go with Endnote though Biblioscape would be cheaper and better still if not for the clunky way of formatting text within titles, eg italicising words (Biblioscape makes you use rtf codes, if you please!)

Good luck, it sounds like lots of us are heading down similar paths ...

  bye, Robin
