Michael:

    Yes, you can substitute the Tandy Interface for the CoCoMax 3
Interface, BUT! 

    You have to modify the HRJI. Connect the 'CASS IN' pin 4 from the
Cassette plug to the Second Joystick Button' pin 6 on the Joystick
plug. Easily done inside the HRJI. The Hires Joystick Adapter that I
used to sell did this. It was a modified HRJI that could be a Tandy
Interface, a CoCoMax 3 interface, or NO interface (standard joystick 
output).
