I was wrong. Apparently it's a Java 8 versus Java 9 issue. Going back to
the original email I sent, what I came across while trying to run DriveWire
under Java  9 was this:

Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM warning: Option UseConcMarkSweepGC was
deprecated in version 9.0 and will likely be removed in a future release.
Launch failed: ClassCastException:
java.base/jdk.internal.loader.ClassLoaders$AppClassLoader
cannot be cast to java.base/java.net.URLClassLoader
