To clarify...

"MAME" was originally arcade game emulation (MAME=Multi Arcade Machine Emulation).

"MESS" was developed as an extension to MAME (separate projects) to include other emulations (computers, handhelds, consoles etc. MESS=Multi Emulator Super System).

The "MESSUI" is a 3rdparty user interface (A MESS wrapper) for MESS allowing the setting of emulation parameters from point-n-click menus instead of a bunch of combo keys to bring up very insufficient menu system. MESSUI allows setting of some things that MAME only allows from the cmd line or changing the config file.

As Steve pointed out, a few years ago the MAME and MESS projects merged to become just "MAME", now supporting everything from both MAME and MESS.

If you're like me and prefer a good menu system, the MESSUI is the way to go. Be sure to do the research and get the MESSUI that supports the latest builds of MAME. or you're in for a MESS...
