[Coco] OT: Upgrade to WIndows 10?

Hi Art,

Been using 10 for a while now and like you had upgraded from 8.1 with Classic Shell.

There is a start button back and I have been using it. Classic Shell would be more familiar, but I am trying to use the new start functionality instead. I have a large amount of software, though, and frankly neither classic shell or the new start menu scale well so I spend a lot of time with WIN+S to search for app names.

I have a touch screen laptop but seldom use the touch functionality.

The new windows settings *almost* takes the place of the old control panel. The old control panel is still accessible and as near as I can tell is needed to uninstall legacy apps. It's hard to find, but possible. If you run classic shell with 10 you should have no problems.

Boot time is a little quicker. Integration with Skydrive/OneDrive/Dropbox is pretty smooth as well. No complaints and once setup is done, sync works pretty much as expected.

The only complaints I have are minor. There are a few toolbar icons I would like to disable but have not figured out to do so (like the touch keyboard icon, and task view icon). They may only be enabled on touch devices, so I understand why this happens - if you have only touch, you need this functionality to be available from touch. And for some reason which seems unique to my laptop, automatic hibernate mode does not work well, so I have a batch file to run to force hibernation.

Overall, it is a nice upgrade from 8.1, will feel familiar after the upgrade and I have not had reason to want to uninstall and revert to any previous version. We still use Win7 at work, and frankly Win10 is smoother and easier to work with than 7.

I hope this helps!
John

I realize this is really, really seriously off-topic, and that there is ample information/reviews elsewhere. But, I'm curious to have the impressions of CoCo people, whose opinions I greatly value, on whether I should take Microsoft up on the free upgrade they occasionally urge me to take advantage of. I currently have Windows 8.1 and am pretty happy with it. I use Classic Shell, so I don't have to experience the Metro/Modern/whatever they are calling it now interface except when I choose to. (There are a couple of apps I use, so I am glad to have them so long as they don't get in my way.) I have a pretty fast desktop, a Dell XPS 8500 with plenty of hard drive space and 8 GB of memory, so I don't think the hardware will be a problem.

So, any impressions from people here who are Windows 10 users?

Art
