I Ran a Small BBS on a CoCo for a while many years ago. I still have the software around somewhere. It wasn't all that impressive, but I was able to get a Text Adventure written in Basic on-line with it. I didn't run it very long and then moved on to running a few different BBS packages on a PC.

The BBS days were fun, but things have changed so much and we've become spoiled with speed and all the many options of the Internet that the BBS just isn't that practical anymore. I like Forums and felt they were a great replacement for the BBS as they provide a sense of community, allow information and posts to be categorized. Personally, I don't like most of the other Social Media services such as Facebook, I use it because it's a great way to keep in touch with Family and I use the CoCo Face Book Page, but I still think Forums are better.

In any case, I understand playing around with a BBS package for Nostalgia or the experience, but as mentioned by others, they just don't get much use and people loose interest. I do think if running one, accessing via Telnet is almost a requirement these days as most people don't have or use modems.

I finally transitioned it off the IIgs and now have it running on Synchronet on a Linux box. I think it’s one of the few that still offer real modem dialup though, in addition to telnet and web access.
