That's been exactly my experience with Seagates.  A few of my 
ST-225/238/251 half-ht. units still work reliably and have quiet bearings. 
All three ST4096s expired while in storage (!)

The only large (> 80M or so) MFM drives that seem to stand the test of 
time are the Maxtor 1140 and 2190 or maybe Priam V130/150.

Now that I have the MFM emulator, a lot of the pressure to find backups is 
relieved.
