Using a terminal emulator works better.

Supercomm is in the nitros9 project and works well.   Start it with /n as
an argument, I.e.:  supercomm /n

Then use the DW Hayes AT commands to connect:  ATD1.2.3.4:5678

That way you'll get reasonable ansi/vt100 terminal emulation and a channel
where control codes won't cause issues.  Any terminal program should work.
