You may be on to something there. One of the major reasons that I upgraded from my old Sun 3/60 workstation to my first PC (a Pentium 90, when those were very mainstream and Pentium 133 machines were new and still a bit dodgy) was that my office-mate got me hooked on Doom 2. That plus the availability of Linux made the PC platform attractive to me, even though I have always loathed most Microsoft products introduced later than their 8-bit BASICs.
