8GB isn't a lot these days. :(

And it's been more than a decade since desktop application programmers gave 
two hoots about RAM usage. I still have to remind myself it's OK to allocate 
variables that are more than a few bytes! Once I even threw caution to the 
wind and malloc'd 64KB!!! ;)
