Depends on the nameserver which actually does the recursive resolving.
Maybe you have one which takes alternative DNS roots or this information
is temporarily cached in the recursive DNS server?
Or has any program manipulated the local hosts file with an hardwired
entry?

Wasn't successful to resolve. DNS name gene.homelinux.net doesn't seem to exist.
Dig (with delegation trace) shows:
