That almost surely would clear the top.  Though of course the nice
thing about EPROMs is that you can re-burn them, which you'd be
sacrificing.  Still, I wouldn't completely rule out the possibility
that it might fit without that.  It depends also on the make of disk
controller:  the Disto ones had a sheet metal top which provided more
clearance than the usual plastic shell.
