No clue. But my archive of the old 7120s maxtor might have something.
(poking at it) Yeah, the file I have as shell_21 is a very small file, not
even $600 bytes. The shell I am using is slightly over $1800 bytes. No
wonder, at that size differential there has to be a huge diff in the
functionality too. From vfy after I split it out, I had a bunch of utils
appended to it also. That merged file carries a date in 1995, but I've no
clue how much older it may be.
{t2|08}/DD/MAXTOR/shell-stf:vfy shell

Length of file: $000018B3
Module found at offset $00000000 in this file
Header for : Shell
Header parity : $80 (good)
Module size : $18B3
Edition : $15
Ty/La At/Rv : $11 $82
Program module, 6809 object, Re-enterable, R/O
Exec. off : $006E
Data Size : $1F00
Module CRC is : $40AAAC (good)
Bytes read : $000018B3

It is attached for your snooping pleasure. Maybe this one will be easier
on the surrounding ears?

Cheers, Gene
