I don't know if you are using the Coco3 or Coco2 emulator but both of Jeff's 
emulators can control the speed of emulation from an entry in the Options menu. 
You get to that menu with the F6 key.
So, if you have no other method for slowing a DIR, you could slow down emulation 
before issuing the command.

It is necessary to slow down emulation of Jeff's emulators when using current 
systems.
