The software was available in the 90's, although I'm not sure if the 
free version was.
We used XC4000 series of FPGAs. The FPGAs cost quite a lot of money back 
then. We used the XC4005 and XC4008.
I'm not sure how many K gates they were probably 5Kgates and 8Kgates.
We uses Sun Sparc 5 and 10 work stations and it took the sort of time 
Mark is experiencing to do the place & route with the Xilinx software.
