Didn't know you were cutting the mags to do this!  Have you considered simply using a heat gun to release the adhesive w/o any damage?  I've used one extensively for removing paper labels from packages, done properly both label and package are undamaged. The key is to not overheat it.

Heat gun on low or medium & magazine closed  Keep heat gun about 4-6" away while heating spline evenly. When fairly warm to the touch, open cover & work it loose.  Once cover is removed, pages should seperate easily.

Since you don't need the hi heat setting for this, a hair dryer should work.
This should be quicker than cutting, and the magazine could be restored after you're done.
