Better yet, Computer Friends is still in business out in Oregon.  I redid literally thousands of ribbons with their MacInker back in the 80s.   http://www.cfriends.com/

Impact printer ribbons do wear out eventually.  Sooner or later random chance will cause enough attention to have been paid to one spot to rip a hole there.  In my experience, on average after about a dozen and a half of its intended lifespans.
