Well, when you compare them to many other joysticks, they do show some
family resemblances to each other. Mainly, they each have narrow
sticks when compared to something like the Atari switch-type joystick,
or a modern PC stick. These sticks in each case go into a ball joint,
and through to the other side, where they actuate the pot assembly.
(The joysticks for my original CoCo, while they looked superficially
like the later CoCo joystick in this picture, didn't have the little
ball joint at all. They just had a stick that went straight into the
pot assembly, with a pivot in the middle. Looking at three generations
of the black, one-button CoCo joystick, they became successively
flimsier. Still, I somehow managed to break the screw post off one of
my original pair. My dad machined me a new stick that was a solid piece
through its entire length.) Superficially, they may be styled
differently. But the resemblance is pretty clear to me.

On the other hand, given the similarity of the CoCo and the CP400, the
similarity is no coincidence!
