[Coco] MESS cassette files

Does anyone here have any experience with CREATING cassette files from MESS?

I'm about to tear out what little hair I have left.

Here's my procedure:
1. click DEVICES pulldown.
2. select CASSETTE item.
3. select CREATE, and navigate to where I want the file, and give it a 
filename (Should this be WAV or CAS; I've tried both?)
4. repeat 1 & 2, but this time select RECORD
5. type CSAVE"FILENAME" in BASIC (I'm using the Coco3/6309/NTSC emulation.
6. When BASIC returns to the OK prompt, I UNMOUNT the CASSETTE device.

After that, I remount the file as a CASSETTE device, and try to CLOAD, but I 
get nothing. The file seems to be the right length (~5MB). If I use a WAV 
player in winXP, there is silence.

HELP!!!
