The only reason I would use this technique is when there was a head crash. 
That is what happened to me and as I stated before, it was a one shot deal. 
Freezing the drive caused the metal to contract enough for the head to 
temperarily clear the platter. After the drive warmed up, just from running, 
the crash expanded and that as they say was that. I got what I needed just 
before the end happened.
