I should pay more attention, I wasn't aware they had already been
I suspect the proper one to use is the 6551 version, editing the hardware
address in it to match your I/O hardware mapping.
Since mice themselves have changed, where can one actually buy a new serial
mouse today? All I can find locally are now ps2 (rare) and usb.
