[Coco] Re: broadband -- anyone on satellite?

When I retire from the USAF around June 2007 I plan on moving "back home". I inherited grandmas old haouse and plan on a little remodeling. The downside is it's 8 miles to the nearest town, so broadband, DSL or cable, is out. I've checked on a couple satellite systems that promise 128K or better speeds. Some require you to purchase $500+ or equipment then charge about hte same as most broadband companies ($45-$50), but one supplies the equipment for $60 a month on a two year contract. They all mention "excessive bandwidth use" but don't define it. Basically if you're using a lot of bandwidth it cuts down speed and access for other customers, so if you use "to much" they cut your speed back to 1/2 rate. I doubt I would ever use "to much". I think that's just to keep people from running a web server or something like that from the satellite system, normal access and downloading shouldn't be affected.

I know weather can affect the system, but are there any other drawbacks? I'm in Afghanistan right now and there is a contractor with a satellite system that I pay $35 a month for access at 100K. It's a bit better than dial-up, but not cable speeds. I'm hoping any system in the states would be a bit faster. The system here is basically a server that everyone logs into and the server has a high speed satellite link. It can slow to dial-up speeds when a lot of people are on.
