One used a 34 wire ribbon cable, split in the center, with the outside edges
moved to the outside of the 50 pin connector. (Or was one side move to one
pin short of the outside?)

According to the documentation I have, the Disto hard drive interface could
drive two Adaptec 4001A cards with two MFM drives. What was not in the
documentation was the fact that the second Adaptec needed a trace cut to
allow it to function as the second unit. That bit of information is in the
Adaptec technical manual which I was fortunate enough to score on at eBay.
Other SCSI-to-MFM cards may or may not have similar details.
