I use the term "vaccum" in imply that there is a voided space left 
when water changes its state from solid to liquid. As ice melts the 
displacement of sea water by the ice creates a vaccum or a void in 
the volume of watrer displaced that is then replaced by the melting 
ice which is a liquid. 

whew! Void would probably be a better term. Both implies an empty 
volume of space that is then filled by another substance.
