I agree, most of those supplied cables were pretty cheap, and the ground  
shield often went bad.  Using high quality cables made for interconnecting  video 
components may help, but beware those screw-on F connectors -- they don't  
like being stressed or flexed either.
 
The switch boxes that selected between the TV antenna/cable and your  
game/computer were pretty shoddy back then, too.  The FCC stepped in and  made them 
improve those boxes -- whatever comes with Sony Playstation or Sega  today is 
hopefully better.
 
If you have a fancy new TV with multiple inputs, you can skip the RF switch  
box altogether.  Or just swap connectors when you want to go back to "real
