Yes if one is skilled in the writing of good DSP code. One would 
need to write a solid fault free digital PLL and that could 
work.Pesonally I am a h ardware person and prefer to do some 
things in hardware over software.

The old NMOS version of the 6811 maybe obsolete but the main 
core of the 68HC11 family is still alive and kicking. There are 
versions of that processor that are and were sold only internal to 
other Motorola divisions. Same goes fo rthe 68HC05 and the HC08.

The automotive electronics industry is in the past few  yrs switching 
over from the HC11 to others. The AVRs and the HC12 are two 
processors used in automobiles.
