If you plug the cable in upside down at the back of the drive (which ISTR  is 
very easy to do), the drive select light will stay on, and so will the  
motor.  But this happens only if the other end of the cable is plugged into  the 
controller and Coco.
 
If a drive does this with nothing connected to the rear, it's got a  problem.
