I lived in the Netherlands, and the single gun murder that year was
headlines for weeks. Almost nobody has a gun because they're not legal.
Period. Even most police don't carry them. They are at airports today in
the hands of the military, but I've never seen them elsewhere.

The kind of situation you describe doesn't happen. Breakins and muggings
and thefts happen in all cities, but the sort of drug problem you fear is
basically a US invention. It took the US to turn drug addiction into a
national crisis as a matter of policy, ever increasing its value (and
profits) by its phony war against it. The government never wanted a
solution. Drug addiction keeps lots of people employed, and a populace
dependent.

Didn't they start as a prison, somewhat like the US? :)

The hometown folks have plenty of propagandists to help you, Gene. I'm not
exactly sure where the gun fetish comes from and how it even got into this
discussion -- but if you invent a problem, you have to invent a solution.
Your guns were supposed to protect you against the government, if I read
those early papers correctly. After I lived outside the US, I realized how
little we're told, and how your guns won't mean a thing when they really do
come for you.
