I left out a line in the startup file.

link shell
load ultipak 1
wcreate /w2 -s=2 0 0 80 24 00 02 02
shell i=/w2&
wcreate /w3 -s=2 0 0 80 24 00 02 03
shell i=/w3&
xmode /w4 par=1
shell i=/w4&
merge /d0/sys/stdfonts
merge /d0/sys/stdpats_2
merge /d0/sys/stdpats_4
merge /d0/sys/stdpats_16
merge /d0/sys/stdptrs
display 1b 32 0 11 33 2 1b 34 2 c

this makes the system lock up as I said earlier.

if I only have term and w4 (32 collum) the system boots but i cant seem to
run any games or such. Thus the reason I couldnt use view and was getting
error 184. Just about every game I tried that can launch from the 80 collum
screen was giving me a 184 error and not starting.

I'll use the OS-9 port of Thexder as an example here. If I boot Nitros-9
creating no windows except TERM I can run thexder. If I create any other
single window including the 32 collum window, thexder will seem to start to
run, but crash with a blank screen. The system is locked up as I cant even
switch to another window using the clear key.

The only thing different about my Nitros9 boot disk from the release version
is I added bbfhdisk and h0 for my B&B harddrive support.
