This is Xroar Android running in a Jellybean 4.3 runtime (Android emulator) on my BlackBerry10 Passport phone

Are you using Xroar Android right now?
‎https://emulationrealm.net/downloads/file/3211-xroar-android

This is an older build and is a prime example of how an older emulator can still be useful. It's resources are very minimal and should work on most older versions of Android
It should work for you as long as you are running ice cream sandwich or jellybean. 4.0 plus. It may work for Honeycomb but I have not tried that on a 3.2.6 build

Here is the quick set-up guide

‎= HOW TO USE =

1) Install xroar-0.31.1-1.apk on your device

2) Start XRoar once to have its data directories created

3) Stuff ROM images into Android/data/uk.org.six809.xroar/files on
   the device (the uncompressed .ROM files, not zip files)

5) Put your xroar.conf to the same directory
   Use for instance "ao null" to disable sound

6) Use the Android command line to load files into the emulator:

   $ am start -a android.intent.action.RUN \
         -n uk.org.six809.xroar/.MainActivity \
         -d filename.cas

7) You can also feed keyboard input to the emulator:

    $ am start -a android.intent.action.SEND \
               -n uk.org.six809.xroar/.MainActivity \
               -e android.intent.extra.TEXT "PRINT MEM"

8) In an external file browser (Ultra Explorer is recommended),
   select WAV, CAS, ROM files and "Open With" XRoar.

Again older emulators can be very usefull when all you have is older hardware to use

Building isn't really the primary problem, I think. I've loaded it from
debian packages, but I can't figure out where to put the ROM images.

I've put ROM images that work for xroar where the documentation for
MAME/MESS seems to indicate, but have not yet got results I can recognize.

Unfortunately, my only currently working computer is an ancient android
tablet, so until I get a new monitor to replace my two dead ones, it's a
litle meaningless to ask questions, so I haven't been. Also haven't had
time to do much with either because I've been busy trying to look for work
and work on a novel at the same time.

While I'm babbling, I'll note that xroar is pretty nice. Once I have a
monitor and some time, I'll have lots of questions for Ciaran.
