Have you looked at some of the linux (Linspire) based boxes available at 
  Frys and other volume retailers.  Walmart is selling a Linux based 
laptop for $499.

The desktop I am using to type this was purchased at Frys in July for $149.
The LCD monitor from Staples was $199 with rebates.
