From tommyjoereynolds at gmail.com Tue Dec 25 17:52:09 2018 From: tommyjoereynolds at gmail.com (Tommy Reynolds) Date: Tue, 25 Dec 2018 17:52:09 -0500 Subject: [Reynolds-L] Update on Reynolds YDNA Project: Member Lineage Info on Website and Haplogroups of Reynolds Progenitors Message-ID: Happy holidays, Reynolds cousins! We're pleased to announce a couple developments in the Reynolds Surname YDNA Project. I'm distributing this announcement through a few different mechanisms so please excuse multiple copies if you belong to multiple groups. First update: We've created a new page where project members can have their lineage information listed. You can see a few examples here ( https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/reynolds-surname-y-dna-study/about/results). Adding your lineage info will help other researchers identify if a particular Reynolds lineage is represented in the project and aid collaboration. If you're already a member of the project please send your lineage info to Nancy Wallander (wallandern at gmail.com). When writing up your info, please try to mimic the concise examples already on the page and please just indicate documented/confirmed ancestors. Second update: Our effort to identify the YDNA haplogroups (aka YDNA "signatures") for our RFA progenitors is making progress. You can see the progenitor haplogroups that have been identified so far at https://www.reynoldsfamily.org/progen.php. We want to fill in the Haplogroup column on that page for every Reynolds progenitor and lineage! So far, we're honing in on the terminal haplogroup of James Reynolds of N Kingstown and John Reynolds of Watertown and have completed this task some other more recent Reynolds progenitors. This effort is critical for building a framework for Reynolds family history researchers to test lineage hypotheses. For example, if someone suspects they descend from James and Deborah of North Kingstown, RI, they can test themselves or a male Reynolds brother/cousin for BY61723. The results of their test will validate whether they match other tested Reynolds men whose research suggests they descend from James of N Kingstown. As additional Reynoldses invest in high resolution YDNA testing like the BigY, our precision in these methods will improve and the haplogroups indicated here will become more specific. To help advance this work, I encourage any Reynolds researcher to do the following: A) Ensure that your most distant Reynolds ancestor is represented in the RFA progenitor list (at https://www.reynoldsfamily.org/progen.php). If they are not listed, add them by contacting Larry "Joe" Reynolds. Listing your Reynolds ancestor with RFA will improve opportunities for research collaboration. B) Conduct a YDNA test on at least one direct line Reynolds man that descends from this progenitor. At a minimum, do a 37 STR test (~$90). It's better if the test covers SNPs, as the BigY does (~$450). Best results are achieved when you collaborate with other Reynoldses and conduct SNP/BigY tests on male descendants of two different sons of your most distant Reynolds ancestor. With the current holiday sale at FTDNA, plus the current 10% off coupon code (JINGLE10), now is a great time to either join the Reynolds YDNA Project or upgrade to a BigY test if that is within your means. This sale continues through December 30th. Feel free to be in touch if you'd like advice on a Reynolds YDNA testing strategy that's appropriate for your situation. Attached, you will find a brochure with details on the project.
