03 Unusual Garlic Burns, in Plain View

This month's maybe-random research item:

"An Unusual Garlic Burn Occurring on an Unexpected Area," Ercan Karabacak, Ersin Aydın, Ali Kutlu, and Bilal Dogan, Case Reports, 2014, bcr2013203285. <https://tinyurl.com/39266mtc>
The authors, at several institutions in Istanbul, Turkey, report:

"A 24-year-old otherwise healthy woman presented with an itchy, burning, erythematous lesion located over her neck. She had applied crushed raw garlic over her neck for about 5 h following a sore throat…. The lesions totally healed within 1 week of combined therapy with topical antibiotic, steroid and antihistaminic ointments. Clinicians should enquire about naturopathic medicines when obtaining medical history"

04 Ig Nobel Prize Ceremony — Notes

The 31st First Annual Ig Nobel Prize ceremony will again be held entirely online, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It will be webcast on THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2021.

Ten new Ig Nobel Prizes will be awarded for things that make people LAUGH, then THINK.

The theme of the this year's ceremony (though not necessarily of the prize winners) is: Engineering. A new, engineering-based mini-opera (called "A Bridge Between People") will premiere as part of the ceremony.

Here are some skimpy details, to which we will be adding info in the coming weeks: <https://www.improbable.com/ig/>

This year, for the first time, you can be part of the After-Party, which will happen online immediately after the ceremony webcast. Details about that, too, will appear soon on the web site (and here).

05 Limerick Challenge: Garlic Balmer on Case of Burning Balm

This month's RESEARCH LIMERICK challenge — Devise a pleasing limerick that encapsulates this study:

"A Chemical Burn from a Garlic Poultice Applied to the Face to Treat Toothache: A Case Report," D. Sisson and C. Balmer, Primary Dental Journal, vol. 3, no. 1, 2014, pp. 28-29.
<https://doi.org/10.1308%2F205016814812136057>
The authors write:

"This report aims to inform all dentists of the risks of raw garlic application to the skin and also to ensure that in the future any patient using the internet for a toothache remedy will be made aware of the potential risk and how to avoid it."

Submit your perfectly formed, delightfully enlightening limerick to:

06 Tattoo Toughening Winner

The judges have chosen a winner in last month's Competition, which asked for a limerick to explain this study:

"Tattooing to 'Toughen Up': Tattoo experience and secretory immunoglobulin A," Christopher D Lynn, Johnna T Dominguez, and Jason A DeCaro, American Journal of Human Biology, vol. 28, no. 5, 2016, pp. 603-609. <https://doi.org/10.1002/ajhb.22847>

Winning LIMERICIST NAN SWIFT writes:

Dominguez and Lynn and DeCaro
Have kept their advice tight and narrow:
  Each extra tattoo
  Robustifies you—
Your skin, organs, muscles, and marrow.

This month's take from our LIMERICK LAUREATE, MARTIN EIGER:

Are you down on your luck, someone who's
Unlikely to heal from a bruise?
  A new opportunity
  Bolsters immunity.
Go cover yourself with tattoos.
