INCOMPETENCE NOTE: The tour will feature tributes to the Ig Nobel Prize-winning (in the year 2000) study of the Dunning-Kruger effect. That study is called "Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties in Recognizing One’s Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated Self-Assessments."

The Stockholm University show will be livecast.

05 SPOTLIGHT: The Cigarette Butt and the Song Thrush

This month's research spotlight shines on cigaretts and singing birds:

"Cigarette Butts Form a Perceptually Cryptic Component of Song Thrush (Turdus philomelos) Nests," Branislav Igic, Phillip Cassey, Peter Samas, Tomas Grim and Mark E. Hauber, Notornis, vol. 56, 2009, pp. 134-138. <http://notornis.osnz.org.nz/system/files/Notornis_56_3_134.pdf> The authors, at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, University of Birmingham, UK, Palacky University, Olomouc, Czech Republic, and Hunter College, City University of New York, USA, report:

"We located several nests of the introduced song thrush (Turdus philomelos) in New Zealand containing discarded cigarette butts.... We used full-spectrum reflectance spectrophotometry, combined with perceptual modelling of the avian visual system to assess the contrast between mud lining, garbage, and the colours of thrush eggs. Our analyses confirmed that, when perceived by birds, cigarette butts were similar in appearance to the nest lining and showed sharp contrast with the eggs."

06 Cigarette Butt and Urban Bird Limerick Contest

This month's challenge —

Monserrat Suarez-Rodrıguez, Isabel Lopez-Rull and Constantino Macıas Garcia, Biology Letters, vol. 9, no. 1, 2013, 20120931. <https://is.gd/CBNDsO> (Thanks to Berry Pinshow for bringing this to our attention.) The authors, at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, report:

"There is evidence that some birds living in cities incorporate cigarette butts into their nests, but the effect (if any) of this behaviour remains unclear. Butts from smoked cigarettes retain substantial amounts of nicotine and other compounds that may also act as arthropod repellents. We provide the first evidence that smoked cigarette butts may function as a parasite repellent in urban bird nests."
