It's not that costly to rent a car for a weekend if you don't make many
long trips and don't trust your around town ride. I had to do that one
year to go to the Chicago fest. Was putting a new engine in the Rambler
(I'm sure you remember that car!) and didn't have time to get it good
broke in before the fest. I rented the cheapest thing I could -- a
little Geo Metro four door. The rental guys were a little skeptical
about taking it from middle Georgia to Chicago, but saw no reason not
to. Just thought it might be a bit cramped and not that comfortable for
a long trip. They were right, but I didn't spend much on gas! Me being
6' didn't help. I drove the 16 hours straight through. I remember
driving with my left foot on the gas (auto trans) and right stretched
over into the passenger footwell for a while. Stopped every 3-4 hours
but it was still cramped... and that little three cylinder was
annoyingly "buzzy" after the first couple hours... but I made it!
I think it was Marty Goodman who told me he didn't own a car for several
years. Rode his bicycle to work, took public transportation if not on
his bike. If he needed/wanted to go out of town it was cheaper to rent a
car a few times a year rather than own and maintain one. I know he was
living in a big California city, but can't remember which. I want to say
San Francisco, but I wouldn't put money on it...
