Back in the day, volt regulation  was expensive. Wall warts were task 
specific, 6v @ 600ma meant just that - 500ma or 700ma might be way 
different voltage (or smell). To get 5v, you'd use one of those stock 6v 
supplies, inline a silicon diode to drop about a volt, maybe add a 
ballast resistor to pull the supply down a little bit more. Anarchy.  
But it saved a couple bucks, a Whopper meal each at the time.

I really like regulated wall warts. Right up there with blue LEDs.
