So in 32K mode you get noisy video and (enough) refresh, so long as you're mostly hitting the ROM. Much less use in 64K mode. Benschop, but that was pretty minimalistic (and the code quality could be better). I only recently heard of LWTools, and it does seem nice, but it uses Mercurial for source control, and I don't. So there's that. Also, I don't need support for all the other CPUs it supports. And I have a few quibbles with the code, like hiding function declarations behind a macro (makes it harder for tools like tags to properly index the code). And ... it's a SEVEN pass assembler? So why write my own? It's something I've wanted to do since college (when I just missed the class on writing your own), and now is as good a time as any. It's already usable (the version on Github [1]) supports both binary and Coco-specific output, and SREC output is done but not yet public). And because I wrote it, it's easier for me to work on the unit test support. As I write this, I just finished up a "proof-of-concept" where I can actually run a test case from the assembler, in 6809 assembly code (using an MC6809 emulator library [2] I wrote several years ago). -spc [1] https://github.com/spc476/a09 [2] https://github.com/spc476/mc6809 From john-murphy at live.ca Fri Dec 1 22:57:03 2023 From: john-murphy at live.ca (John Murphy) Date: Sat, 2 Dec 2023 03:57:03 +0000 Subject: [Coco] Unit tests on an 8 bit machine In-Reply-To: <20231202024310.GA1410@brevard.conman.org> References: <20231129191852.GB1558@brevard.conman.org> <20231202024310.GA1410@brevard.conman.org> Message-ID: ?all the other CPUs? it supports??? If I had time for a certain side project that's still sitting out there waiting, I'd be writing my own, along with my own emulator. But then again, Joe H. Allen has found time to get the 6809 emulation working on his EXORsim, and I was able to hack EXORsim to pretend to do (not cycle-accurate) 6801 op-codes, so my need for writing my own has significantly decreased. > John Murphy > > > Sent from Mail for Windows > > From: Sean Conner via Coco > Sent: December 1, 2023 9:43 PM > To: Joel Rees via Coco > Cc: Sean Conner > Subject: Re: [Coco] Unit tests on an 8 bit machine > > > I used to use A09 by L. The hardest portion of writing the assembler so far---parsing the 6809 indexing mode. Parsing expressions was pretty trivial after that. I've also found it easier to change old assembly code than to try to change the assembler to deal with old code (and I don't have much old code to deal with). > > ?And ... it's a SEVEN pass assembler?? > > Not as far as I can tell. It means the source code might not match the binary code, and some people worry about that. My own assembler will warn about such issues though, and the only "optimization" it does is change '0,reg' to ',reg' (even when the expression before the comma evalutes to 0), but you can easily override that if you want. -spc From joel.rees at gmail.com Sat Dec 2 00:53:44 2023 From: joel.rees at gmail.com (Joel Rees) Date: Sat, 2 Dec 2023 14:53:44 +0900 Subject: [Coco] Unit tests on an 8 bit machine In-Reply-To: <20231202043305.GB1410@brevard.conman.org> References: <20231129191852.GB1558@brevard.conman.org> <20231202024310.GA1410@brevard.conman.org> <20231202043305.GB1410@brevard.conman.org> Message-ID: On Sat, Dec 2, 2023 at 1:33?PM Sean Conner via Coco wrote: > > It was thus said that the Great Joel Rees via Coco once stated: 8-o > [...] > > As many as seven, if I recall correctly, depending on settings. I just went hunting for the information on number of passes and optimization. The only thing I seem to find is in the updates: ** 2018-12-12: LWTOOLS 4.16. The most significant update to this version is the operandsizewarning pragma which will cause warnings to be generated for lines where a smaller addressing mode could be used. Also of use is the new << prefix for index offsets to force 5 bit offset mode. ** -- Joel Rees http://reiisi.blogspot.jp/p/novels-i-am-writing.html From cocomalt at 6809.org.uk Sat Dec 2 01:52:26 2023 From: cocomalt at 6809.org.uk (Ciaran Anscomb) Date: Sat, 02 Dec 2023 06:52:26 +0000 Subject: [Coco] SAMx4 - CPLD-based SAM replacement In-Reply-To: References: <19738.1701438174@candle.6809.org.uk> Message-ID: <9137.1701499946@candle.6809.org.uk> Joel Rees via Coco wrote: > On Fri, Dec 1, 2023 at 10:43?PM Ciaran Anscomb via Coco wrote: > > Ok I think this is ready to release: > > > > http://www.6809.org.uk/dragon/samx4/ > > Looks cool. > > So is the x4 in reference to bank switching? He still has his own website if you want to get familiar with the games he wrote and think of questions to ask him. https://www.cocoquest.com/ - January 6 we have a double interview with Doug Masten & Glen Dahlgren, covering the Coco 3 game The Contras. http://www.lcurtisboyle.com/nitros9/contras.html - January 20 Glen Dahlgren comes back - he has the final book in his Chaos series coming out, and possibly some further Coco stuff as well. https://mysteriumstoryworks.substack.com/p/want-a-free-copy-of-the-realm-of?r=2hpgl3&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web Special Guests today: --------------------- - Erico & Luciano to talk about Retro SC show in Brazil that they were at last weekend - Ciaran Anscomb to talk about his SAM replacement/enhancement Fixed the timing on his replacement SAM satellite board https://www.facebook.com/groups/dragon32/posts/3595909727335337/ Officially released the design: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2359462640/posts/10161055145397641/ Upcoming conventions/trade shows of interest to Coco people: ------------------------------------------------------------ While not a Coco show as you can tell by the title, "World of Commodore 2023", Frank of RetroRewind (who is the sponsor) wanted to mention that they will be selling Coco items at the show including CocoSDC's at the show today and tomorrow in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.. and with show special prices: https://www.tpug.ca/world-of-commodore/world-of-commodore-2023/ VCF SoCal: Feb 17-18, 2024 in Orange, California Hotel Fera - Events Center 100 The City Drive, Orange, CA 92868 https://vcfsocal.com/index.html CocoFest: May 4-5, 2024 in Carol Stream, Illinois (near Chicago) Holiday Inn & Suites https://www.glensideccc.com/cocofest/ BoatFest 3: June 14-16, 2024 Social Event Space Hurricane, WV https://www.ticketsource.us/boatfest2024/boatfest-retro-computer-expo-2024/e-raedpb VCF SouthWest: June 14-16, 2024 (same weekend as BoatFest, and usually has a lot of Tandy people hanging out since that is Tandy's hometown). Davidson-Gundy Alumni Center at University of Texas - Dallas Dallas, Texas https://www.vcfsw.org/ Coco 1/2/3 (and multi-platform) ------------------------------- 1) George Janssen released his next assembly language tutorial video with more Coco 3 text screen code. It should be noted that he is also uploading the source code to his channel on the Coco Discord (Programming and Development -> assembly-with-georgej): https://youtu.be/oKE_q3uNAsc?si=ePaR_SgmA5wuYnpV And part 2 (last part of using ROM calls for high res text screens): https://youtu.be/U3qytaqGO1o?si=G8H0Xsyj45tmQsR_ And Part 3 (Using Objects for the high res text screen): https://youtu.be/StWBLX4O2No?si=RWA7IPXgTRYEm9pW Also, as we have noted before - you can get the source listings for George's lessons from The Coco Discord in the #assembly-with-georgej George's channel on Discord: https://discord.com/channels/301741082600013824/844380142289813534 2) CocoTown did a video on working to fix MAME's debugger, and also delves into the programming trickery used by DragonFire to get multiple color sets active in the same scanline. He does some patches to MAME and tests things on Coco 1/2's, Dragons and the Coco 3 - it's all interconnected in MAME: https://youtu.be/IFB1bSU0T1s?si=-reoZR9kXav4zXtR 3) For the technically minded, Hacker News had a link and discussion to an article on "The Boston Diaries" website, which talks about writing a maze drawing program in assembly language for the Coco 1/2, and trying to debug it. It then goes into a discussion of whether using "Unit Testing" methods should apply to old 8 bit CPU's. Thanks to James Jones for posting the link in the Coco group on Facebook: https://boston.conman.org/2023/11/27.1 4) Thomas Cherryhomes has posted the source code for his FSK coder to convert CAS format files (which are just data) to audio for the #esp32 DAC, as part of getting Fujinet onto a Coco: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2359462640/posts/10161051530062641/ Source link on github: https://github.com/tschak909/cocoencode 5) Simon Jonassen posted a couple of screenshots of his web-based graphics editor, this time showing the 2 color sets using the same graphic: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2359462640/posts/10161048653352641/ He also posted a video showing interaction with the web page and it's menus: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2359462640/posts/10161056600292641/ 6) A retro computer show happened last weekend in Wisconsin Rapids by the Wisconsin Computer Club, where they had an open house including Coco's: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2359462640/posts/10161047596877641/ 7) EJ Jaquay posted a new update for VCC (version 2.1.8.2). This fixes the TFM bug we mentioned a week or two ago, as well as some other fixes & additions: DP register properly displayed in the debugger, "Set PC" button added to Debugger Processor window, file exit bug fix & documentation updates: https://github.com/VCCE/VCC/releases 8) MimsyWasTheBorogove channel on YouTube put up a short video showing the Coco 3 palette demo that was include in the Coco 3 BASIC manual: https://youtu.be/rYe3CfWensY?si=OFimNqsqJ1VLNipN He also included the Coco 1/2 compatible page-flipping Yo-Yo demo as well, using 8 PMODE 0 pages to smoothly and quickly show a YoYo in action: https://youtu.be/py-yYJAJwys?si=8rrxqwf-EsXVae4u 9) Tricob1974 put up a video on YouTube of his new random maze generator called Maze Creator. This is an updated, faster version of Maze Make (Pretty sure this is Richard Kelly from the Facebook Coco group): https://youtu.be/EBXsARCTPWk?si=bmBQag4woPVCxuX2 Download link from the Color Computer Archive: https://colorcomputerarchive.com/repo/Disks/Games/Maze%20Creator%20v1.00%20%28Retro%20Rick%29.zip 10) Jim Mullis (who is working on the Coco 3 Super Friends game) has posted a video of the demo for GrafExpress 2.0 that came with the package (it's an add on for Coco 3 BASIC to add windowing, sprites, music, faster graphics, etc.). For those who haven't seen/heard it: https://youtu.be/p-MAecRSK7g?si=hKj_y2mpT3Ia-wU5 (I will note that it also supports 256 colors on composite monitors at a lower resolution, and there is a demo for that as well not included here. There is also some sound distortion near the end of the video that does not happen normally.) 11) The Break Key on Youtube did a video showing how to build a cassette cable for the Coco from scratch. This is a brand new channel (he mentions that he is planning a Drivewire cable next), so check his page out, leave some comments and subscribe: https://youtu.be/Y41wW8HYHJg?si=JU0LmppsVjnA_JY7 MC-10 ----- 1) Earlier this week Jim Gerrie released a program for the MC-10 specifically for American Thanksgiving: https://www.facebook.com/groups/731424100317748/posts/6760761707383927/ 2) Ruben Aparicio on the MC-10 group on Facebook posted how he updated his Alice to be "internationalized" to run NTSC: https://www.facebook.com/groups/731424100317748/posts/6757728354353929/ Dragon 32/64 ------------ 1) As promised last week, Richard Harding has posted the next old TV newscast covering Dragon Data to the Dragon group on Facebook - this time when the receivers were called in: https://www.facebook.com/groups/dragon32/posts/3597199810539662/ 2) Phil Harvey-Smith posted an update on this progress on the DragonVGA (VGA output), where it is getting closer to handling precise timing used by some programs to changes graphics modes/color sets on a scanline basis: https://www.facebook.com/groups/dragon32/posts/3594122037514106/ Game On news (all Coco related platforms): ========================================== 1) Jim Gerrie ported a 4K version of Othello called "O-Jello" originally written by Clyde Perkins in 1980 for the Bally Astrocade (with it's Bally BASIC add on) for The Arcadian Volume 2, Number 5. It has both 1 and 2 player modes (quite a feat for 4K!). NOTE: If you grabbed it when he first posted it, be aware that he fixed a bug and re-released it: https://youtu.be/_iOyRy_h8Xg?si=yuXejeznIJSSFuog He also ported a 1977 version of Blackjack originally on a SOL computer. He mentions in the comments that the dealer has "lots of personality" in this one: https://youtu.be/QmNBob6Tdek?si=JornVES2nr-5B-Tk 2) Elksoft has released a modern port (including source code) of the Coco version of Imagic's Demon Attack, with optional enhanced colors, music soundtrack, etc. It is written in BlitzBasic and works on Windows machines (it mentions Windows 95/98, 2000, XP and Vista for sure): Website: http://www.eiksoft.com/ Video: https://youtu.be/OoxkhKE61Ow?si=dneq12Wj54t1ng0d 3) Brown Robin Bird on YouTube revisited Sock Master's Donkey Kong Remix, this time making it a video rather than a livestream (that didn't go too well a few months ago). Much better this time, showing several screens: https://youtu.be/RWxmIVxYuOo?si=21eLY64zBHhC0e5F 4) A Gaming Channel by L.R. posted some more Coco high score attempt videos on XRoar (first time in some months), including: Zaxxon, Thexder, Temple of ROM, Super Pitfall, Space Assault, Whirlybird Run and Skiing: (Scroll down for most recent) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNrXEtRb7Lho_r6tkFG2FeQlVncB4m-MA He also did a ton of Dragon ones as well: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNrXEtRb7LhpnEWcnhYNxa8WNlO0QK2T9 5) Chronologically Gaming covered some more Coco games this week, including one of my favorites of all time, Phantom Slayer: Phantom Slayer (both Coco and Dragon versions), Realm of Nauga (from Chromasette), and Scarfman (Dragon): https://youtu.be/M96i3zPYK5k?si=1ZKSNMGNEAY4rJWY 6) Retro365 put up 2 videos that are not strictly Coco, but shows the rarer IBM PC CGA graphics version of Calixto Island & The Black Sanctum games from Mark Data Products. These were ported from the Coco graphics originals to the IBM PC. The Black Sanctum: https://youtu.be/4ETNszbkDw0?si=va_QqMcNxw2wrN7j Calixto Island: https://youtu.be/m5AnEIHkGCM?si=MJ978_K5qr7LGebE ======================================= Get connected with more of the CoCo, Dragon and MC-10 community here: https://thecoconation.com/community/ Please trim any replies to *just* the specific item replied to. -- Robert "Exile In Paradise" Murphey Weylan-Yutani Corporation From brucewcalkins at charter.net Sun Dec 3 11:30:09 2023 From: brucewcalkins at charter.net (Bruce W. Ah so the answer is definitely maybe ;) I'll try it in my PAL CoCo 2B at some point, which may well have a '785 in - not sure - and if it needs any tiffling, I'll tiffle it! I'm actually a little sad that I don't _have_ any machines using two 16K banks (or indeed any 4K banks), so there's no immediate drive to add RAS1# support to it. Seems like it would be easier to just put some longer leads on the cap and relocate it a bit.? Adding length to the cap would alter the capacitance a tiny bit, but I doubt much given the size of that cap (it's just a decoupling one, so the specific capacitance is not critical).? Solder half inch legs to it, some shrink wrap, and solder it back it, so the cap leads lay flat on the PCB going towards the back of the board.? Moving it under is also possible, though I think the shield is important as well, and that would interfere.? Another option is to solder a low profile socket to the PCB and insert the ZIF into the low profile socket. Another option is to use a set of .01x.01 square header pins 1x14 (same pins you see on IDE drive connectors) and solder them to the ZIF socket leads, soldering the combo into the PCB.? This is, in my opinion, the best option, as the ZIF is soldered in, the cap can simply be pushed over so it lays flat, and no ribbon cable to create crosstalk issues. Is there a way to change the RS232 port's data bits from 7 to 8? One of the CoCo manuals states that the default settings for the RS232 port are 600 baud, 7 data bits, one stop bit. I have seen pokes needed to change the baud rate but want to us the port exchange 8 bits. DLOADM must do it so I hope there is a simple way to do it. My next project is to develop an interface card (ROM cartridge slot) that can replace the Disk Interface with USB Flash drives, replace the Disk ROM with Flash that can be swapped with different versions (or different ROM images) and if I can do that then I probably support 2 UARTS. I have it designed in principle and now prototyping it. I do not expect to sell copies of it because it is likely to be too expensive, I am doing it because that is what I like to do. Bruce P. Curtis Boyle Special Guests today: --------------------- Mike Snyder, who authored many games/programs for all 3 Coco's for T&D magnazine and SPORTSware (Gnome, Firespire/Gnome Quest II): https://www.cocoquest.com/ Interviews schedule: -------------------- - January 6 we have a double interview with Doug Masten & Glen Dahlgren, covering the Coco 3 game The Contras. http://www.lcurtisboyle.com/nitros9/contras.html - January 20 Glen Dahlgren comes back - he has the final book in his Chaos series coming out, and possibly some further Coco stuff as well. https://mysteriumstoryworks.substack.com/p/want-a-free-copy-of-the-realm-of?r=2hpgl3&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web Upcoming conventions/trade shows of interest to Coco people: ------------------------------------------------------------ VCF SoCal: Feb 17-18, 2024 in Orange, California Hotel Fera - Events Center 100 The City Drive, Orange, CA 92868 https://vcfsocal.com/index.html Interim Computer Festival: March 23-24. This is a pre-announcement for a retro computer show in the Pacific Northwest Area. Details (specifically where, etc.) will be coming later, and registration will open in January. (No website yet) CocoFest: May 4-5, 2024 in Carol Stream, Illinois (near Chicago) Holiday Inn & Suites https://www.glensideccc.com/cocofest/ BoatFest 3: June 14-16, 2024 Social Event Space Hurricane, WV https://www.ticketsource.us/boatfest2024/boatfest-retro-computer-expo-2024/e-raedpb VCF SouthWest: June 14-16, 2024 (same weekend as BoatFest, and usually has a lot of Tandy people hanging out since that is Tandy's hometown). Davidson-Gundy Alumni Center at University of Texas - Dallas Dallas, Texas https://www.vcfsw.org/ Coco 1/2/3 (and multi-platform) ------------------------------- 1) Bob Emery (La Coco Strangiato on YouTube) did a livestream video showing his Turbo-X LED board now fully working, showing it with regular (.895 MHz), double speed (1.78 MHz) and GIME-X turbo (2.86 MHz): https://www.youtube.com/live/jbzrnT2B2QU?si=hJFXfKl_ogmkdQI5 2) David Wiens has made the MSDOS disk file manager (MSF) and it's manual available for download on his website. Bill Nobel and I used this at work to read double density MSDOS/PCDOS disks (both 360K and 720K). It requires the replacement SDisk3 disk driver (also available on his site), which is a much enhanced driver than the stock OS9 or NitrOS9 ones. Since the file manager is native, it also reads and writes to MSDOS disks much faster than utilities like PCDOS, and even includes special commands that handle MSDOS or both MSDOS and OS9 disks at once. The only caveat is that it takes a lot of System RAM (you still need RBF to handle the OS9 side of things, although the old wd1773 driver can be removed: https://www.sardis-technologies.com/csg/csg-msf.htm 3) The Coco Crew has posted an audio interview that Boisy did with Kathy Paur (formerly of Tandy subsidiary A&A Electronics, who were in charge of parts for Tandy computers and other products): https://youtu.be/byuOv81pkvE?si=eVWTO9yQ_uy8E8v4 4) George Janssen has upload Lesson 3 for his new Beginners 6809 assembly course to his YouTube channel, this time covering the MMU in the Coco 3. Part 1 covers how it works: https://youtu.be/LoCF6j6OK-0?si=mlObya6XDZpPkoEt And part 2 covers some actual code using them: https://youtu.be/XE_mq9Pb8vk?si=WWC-IRCx_fYrsHlo 5) The next live Trash Talk show (on YouTube) will be December 16 at 7 pm Eastern. This covers all TRS-80's, usually concentrating on the Z80 models, but it involves the Coco at times, too: https://www.youtube.com/@TRS80TrashTalk 6) Henry of the new YouTube channel "The Break Key" has another cable build video this week - this time for Drivewire. He also shows installing and using pyDrivewire: https://youtu.be/9BhHCVumkGc?si=go1-tYj-aIyOcaJE 7) I was a fish out of water on the Retro Repair Roundup live this past week: https://www.youtube.com/live/6LCo51U_9EQ?si=JW9fQnM4LjL_w1Qm 8) A new Flex Facebook page was created late this past week, for those interested on probably the 3rd most popular OS for the Coco 1/2 (after DECB and OS-9 Level I, and it was the second most popular until OS9 was released alongside the Coco 2): https://www.facebook.com/groups/flexoperatingsystem 9) Thomas Cherryholmes posted an update to his porting Fujinet to the Coco - the cassette based bootstrap is now working: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2359462640/posts/10161064018992641/ And booting Canyon Climber from Oracle Cloud after loading HDBDOS from cassette: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2359462640/posts/10161065946677641/ 10) Simon Jonassen posted an update video to his online Coco 1/2 graphics editor: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2359462640/posts/10161063257282641/ And this morning a screenshot showing color selection using both mouse buttons: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2359462640/posts/10161065638322641/ 11) Joel Ewy has gotten his MM/1 SCSI drive backed up onto to solid state with the BlueSCSI device (which works on multiple older machines), so his MM/1 is back in action. He posted two short videos about the transfer: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3194643584094250/posts/4340014536223810/ MC-10 ----- 1) Dragon 32/64 ------------ 1) Robcfg (who recently joined our Discord - Welcome Rob!) posted a new tool for accessing DragonDOS images. Not only does this let you look at the what files are on a VDK files, but also lets you view BASIC listings, saved picture files, etc. all from within this GUI based programs. Details and screenshots on the World of Dragon forums (I missed this before): https://archive.worldofdragon.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=11145 2) Richard Harding himself posted the 3rd video about the history of Dragon Data from Brian Moore's personal recordings (Brian worked at Dragon Data at the end). This is from when they were in receivership: https://www.facebook.com/groups/dragon32/posts/3601475996778710/ 3) Julian Brown posted some updates to his Revision 3 Alpha 2 Dragon 32 boards. This once incorporates the new SAM that Ciaran has designed (which can include 256K RAM support). Julians is also planning to try and support full 1.8 MHz with video (like the SAM Doubler does on a Coco 1/2): https://www.facebook.com/groups/dragon32/posts/3600035413589435/ 4) Retronaut on YouTube is making a series about going through his tech history. Last night's episode (Chapter 4) is about the Dragon 32, and it sounds like the next episode will be as well: https://youtu.be/5EL-T6iHMts?si=7sMSxGwbzjHUZM9w Game On news (all Coco related platforms): ========================================== 1) The Coco Show's final episode for this year will be recorded live on Twitch and YouTube on Sunday, December 10 at 10 AM EST. You can watch it live here: Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/amigosretrogaming YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AmigosRetroGaming/streams I should note that on Twitch you get to watch and interact with Aaron and Brent during the pre and post show; on YouTube live it's just the regular show (I think). 2) Retro365 continued playing the PC ports of the Mark Data Products graphic adventure games, adding in Sea Search, Shenanigans, Trekboer and The Vortex Factor. https://www.youtube.com/@Retro365/videos 3) Chris Presley announced on the Coco Facebook group that his Star Trek Trivia game is now available on the Color Computer Archive (both to download and play, or play through online XRoar). This is for all 3 Coco's: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2359462640/posts/10161063951117641/ Direct link to DSK image: https://colorcomputerarchive.com/repo/Disks/Games/Star%20Trek%20Trivia%20(Chris%20Presley).zip 4) Tim and AJ on Sibling Rivalry played a very early type in game for the Coco (Laser Star, originally published in Rainbow by Jarb Software). It had bugs still (which I speculated when I first uploaded it - in fact I think I had fixed a few myself, but obviously not all of them). So this is actually 2 parts combined - Tim went through the code before the second segment comparing it to the magazine, and then made a few of his own improvements: https://youtu.be/pHyXLjAl5XQ?si=30BR3wZQm_V9U43_ 5) Jim Gerrie snuck in an MC-10 game last night - Checkers originally by John Krutch in 1981 from the book "Experiments in AI For Small Computers". It's a bit limited - it can't do multiple jumps or king itself on it's own. I am not sure, but I *think* it runs in 4K RAM?: https://youtu.be/Xtyygk6qM1Y?si=faCoYEcrijRevUBT ======================================= Get connected with more of the CoCo, Dragon and MC-10 community here: https://thecoconation.com/community/ Please trim any replies to *just* the specific item replied to. -- Robert "Exile In Paradise" Murphey Weylan-Yutani Corporation From jimokeefe39 at gmail.com Mon Dec 11 20:35:36 2023 From: jimokeefe39 at gmail.com (Jim OKeefe) Date: Mon, 11 Dec 2023 19:35:36 -0600 Subject: [Coco] CoCo Turbo LED and more... The floppy's in the auction is (probably) not the data that was "stolen", and in reality there is about 4-5 backup disks and that is all that I counted. It may not be worth the 2500 dollar price tag for these 5 unique disks, they may not work, they may not contain anything of value. It will be a big risk taking on such an auction at that price without knowing what is actually on the disks. -----Original Message----- From: Coco On Behalf Of Wayne Campbell via Coco Sent: Wednesday, December 13, 2023 11:51 AM To: CoCoList for Color Computer Enthusiasts Cc: Wayne Campbell Subject: Re: [Coco] Steve "Bjorn's" status With the prices being listed, I don't believe it's going to be possible to preserve all this unless the people in this community get together and come up with the money to buy it. Another comment someone related noted the items were soon for the dumpster had these folks not saved the items. Given the amount of email and PMs I've fielded over the past few days, some folks are concerned these items will be lost and unpreserved if they are not purchased now. There's a competing view that such concerns are unfounded, as the community has been good about archiving software and documentation in the past. I can't be sure which is true, but it does leave a lot to chance. In this case, the sellers' assumption that these items would hold value for someone put them on everyone's radar, but what about the estate buyers who simply discard disks because they seem useless or not valuable enough to spend the effort to make a post or an auction? I've no idea of Steve's Bjork's health or whereabouts (GCCC does not have a phone for him, I checked) and texts to potential relatives have gone unanswered.? I also don't know the background of how these items came to be on eBay.? But, all of this does present a question everyone should ask themselves: Have you made some plans for your items of community interest to ensure this doesn't happen to your stuff? * None of us are getting younger * It's entirely possible Steve, who has had a few health issues, is still with us, but his family have had to focus on his care, and this is their attempt to tidy up given he won't need this stuff anymore. * Maybe he give specific instructions, but they are not being followed, either out of spite or because of grief. * Maybe he did not make plans for his stuff. Conjecture on what's happened in not really productive, but if this will convince folks to make concrete plans (or archive their items now), that would be helpful. I've read comments decrying Steve for not making a better plan to ensure his items were preserved. I'd hate to see the same comments made about others on the list. If nothing else, it bothers me that all of this is happening with such urgency. Rash decisions concerning funds are rarely good decisions, no matter how noble the cause. For all of the controversial views people have about Steve, he's a member of the community and he added value through the software he wrote. But, so are many of you, and you have items of value as well. I hope you take steps to ensure it is preserved and not leave it to chance. The same holds true beyond the CoCo, and even beyond computing. He introduced me to In and Out burger, got me to Knott?s and Magic Mountain, took me to El Capitan Theater to see something (Hunchback, maybe?). I am left with endless memories hanging out with him and talking tech and theme parks. He will be missed. -- Allen Huffman - PO Box 7634 - Urbandale IA 50323 - 515-999-0227 (vmail/TXT only) http://www.subethasoftware.com - https://www.facebook.com/subethasoftware http://www.PayPal.me/AllenHuffman. http://swagbucks.com/refer/allenhuffman > On Dec 19, 2023, at 2:34?PM, Eric via Coco wrote: > > ?The Glenside Color Computer Club regrets to announce the passing of > Steve Bjork on April 10, 2023. He lived in Whittier, which is in the far east part of LA county, and they're burying him in Chatsworth, which is in the west part of the San Fernando valley. That is quite interesting. I wonder why they are burying him so far away from where he lived. I never actually got to meet him in person, but I've known that he lived out here in L.A. for a long time. I'm sorry to hear that he passed. My condolences to his family and his close friends, and I hope that the body of his work is being preserved. He contributed a lot to many causes. Ah, that rings a bell. When I bought my first CoCo 1, it was an RS salesman that helped me out ? bought it with his discount and upgraded it to 64K. BUT, I found out a year or two later that it could not access the upper 64K. I had to order an upgrade that was a chip with some wires off it or something. That enabled getting to the upper 32K. I think that was the original 32K - 64K upgrade. They just started putting 64K in it, but the system was not wired to access it. I know Bjork did a ton of hardware mods on his own systems. I would have loved to have seen what all he had for his PC-repack development system that was stolen. That Model 3 repack was interesting looking, in the listing. ? You have to modify the HRJI. Connect the 'CASS IN' pin 4 from the Cassette plug to the Second Joystick Button' pin 6 on the Joystick plug. Easily done inside the HRJI. The Hires Joystick Adapter that I used to sell did this. Wood (CocoMax graphics) and Tom Bedwell (music): https://youtu.be/fCHnQGze53c?si=OW3pK5rAV24hUlvi 16) Another Christmas themed one was some screenshots from Christmas themed Coco 3 pictures: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2359462640/posts/10161085838042641/ 17) And another - Simon reposted his Rotozoom Santa Coco 3 demo - with 4 Christmas tunes: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2359462640/posts/10161085830267641/ (The DSK image is uploaded to the Files section of the Coco Facebook group) 18) Retro Tech Repair on YouTube put up a video about fixing the yellow bar video problem on a Coco 2: https://youtu.be/D5zfXdDU0-8?si=iDMIWgwnJrY9_p1c 19) Joel Ewy put up an OpenSCAD source file to make a removable front panel bezel to access the SD card in a BlueSCSI (that we showed recently mounted in his MM/1): https://www.facebook.com/groups/3194643584094250/posts/4357430744482189/ MC-10 ----- 1) Jim Gerrie did a quick video exploring where the MC-10 stands regarding a Microsoft BASIC bug (see his youtube video description), inspired by Robin of 8-Bit Show and Tell channel exploring it on other platforms: https://youtu.be/u3J4oFUHgqk?si=A6RlJ2DRP3icPnGu While we are getting to it late, Jim also released a snowfall Christmas program for the MC-10 as an entry for an BASIC coding contest on Facebook: https://youtu.be/9LBoOn7rMyY?si=7-eWxoERi-_3tnuj He also ported a simple random melody composer program, originally written in BASIC way back in 1972 from Dymax. Jim added the ability to actually play the composition as well: https://youtu.be/lVGv_PF-2Hw?si=oxax3T10qscoVzJV 2) Greg Hamilton started working on some animations for an MC-10 game that he is working on, and put up screenshots and a video to show his progress so far: https://www.facebook.com/groups/731424100317748/posts/6872107659582664/ Dragon 32/64 ------------ 1) Phil Harvey-Smith posted some photos of his Dragon with the dragonpicoVGA installed in the Dragon Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/dragon32/posts/3610507372542239/ 2) Richard Harding (Dragon historian) posted in the Dragon facebook group some photos and drawings about the Dragon Professional: https://www.facebook.com/groups/dragon32/posts/3610375779222065/ 3) Tom Erik Gundnersen posted a small photo of something I don't recall seeing before: a Dragon sold in Finland but rebranded as the "Finlux Dragon": https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10161463235257146&set=p.10161463235257146&type=3 4) Spanish YouTube channel Manuel Cuenca (MMChip) did a 12 minute Dragon 32 repair video: https://youtu.be/f6Lmylsc6gQ?si=793QduvyIyGrWizG 5) John Whitworth of DragonPlus Electronics has added an iBOM for the Dragon PSU (Power Supply Unit). If I understand this, iBOM is an "interactive Bill of Materials" that helps people constructing these boards keep track of what parts they need and which they have installed? The thread even contains some photos of the Dragon Alpha - including the insides (the link does a Google Translate from Spanish to England): https://retrowiki-es.translate.goog/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=100041508&_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=wapp Game On news (all Coco related platforms): ========================================== 1) Tim & AJ over at the "My Drunk Sibling" Youtube channel posted episode 114 of Sibling Rivalry, this time playing Panzer on the Coco - A cool T&D 2 player game: https://youtu.be/XYPZ6QOppQU?si=KzTciKl1RHv4v6Kc 2) Jim Gerrie has been VERY busy these last two weeks. This is a multi-player text adventure loosely based on John Christopher's Tripods trilogy. Jim added a graphics intro screen, and it should be noted that the almost 15 minute video is a _complete_ walkthrough: https://youtu.be/-INmGI-3J-c?si=WIS8FvdPQHf-FLeH Also, along with help from his son Charlie, Jim has improved the algorithm for his port of "O-jello" (an othello clone) to play much more intelligently and is more challenging for the human player. Still fits in 4K! https://youtu.be/3vrAX8olYl8?si=oO_TNVjYU6YYNl1N His blogpost (see the Addendum part way down for the updates): https://jimgerrie.blogspot.com/2023/11/o-jello-by-clyde-perkins-1980.html He also ported New York New York from the Coco/Dragon (originally by Hal Renko & Sam Edwards in their book "Terrific Games for Your Tandy Color" to the MC-10: https://youtu.be/PaBdP4F9FZc?si=SWn7YnZiSsAB-o43 David Mitchell's video showing the original Coco version with his added title screen: https://youtu.be/RvkwuCje3NM?si=YCN-iw2NWTs_hRPq (Original Coco/Dragon code can be found here:) https://github.com/daftspaniel/RetroCornerRedux/tree/main/Tandy/CoCo/Type-In/NewYorkNewYork He also updated his Chess C4 program, modifying the SG-4 graphics to make the pieces more distinguishable: https://youtu.be/FYWbvwRHXNw?si=ZrsNFG13RHY4YJc8 3) ARCADE GAMES on YouTube put up a video of 50 "Super" games on the TRS-80 Color Computer. I used to join the show, and would have something I could share if there was time, but even back then, there was always so much stuff going on there was no need for extra filler. Just wild. Great times. Thank you for sharing these summaries. I haven?t had the 3 hours (assuming TCN is still running that length?) to devote to watching the show in quite some time. I would have liked to join for the Steve Bjork discussion since I have spent so much time hanging out with him over the years, but I?m still reeling over the news. It has prompted me to poke around at some CoCo stuff, mostly looking for things I wanted to share in case something happened to me or my collection. Happy new years, everyone.
