It's really the other way around. The 'open source ' community seems to steer away from proprietary formats that have a price tag attached to them.

I would have thought with Microsoft more embracing open source etc with their current leadership that this would have been less of an issue these days. Sigh. Libre Office does work, though (I use it on OSX as well).
