The termination resistor pack ALWAYS goes on the last drive on the cable. 
Otherwise the last drive will be an open circuit echo, playing hob with 
the data.  The variable resistor, is probably a spindle speed trimmer. 
If there is a black and white strobe  pattern pasted on the bottom of 
the spindle, trim it until the ghost of the stripes as its running, is 
standing still under a flourescent lamp.
