Thanks for the guidance and sorry for the confusion.  I am indeed booting NitrOS9 from the SDC and have a single real floppy drive.  Will try to change the boot drive as you suggest.  Thanks!

 From your question, you seem to be booting NitrOS-9 from your floppy. If not and you are booting 
NitrOS-9 from either a CoCoSDC image or Drivewire, just make sure that NitrOS-9 is not mounted on 
the drive number from which you want to read a real floppy.
NitrOS-9 can be altered so that it will boot from a drive other than drive0. By default you can boot 
from the SDC on drives 0 &1 and from a floppy disk from drives 0-3. All you need to do is change 
byte $1CC in the Boot module to another value.
Boot_sdc the values default to 0 or 1. Boot_1773 (floppy) the values are more complicated as you 
need to combine the drive number with the side select.

So if you want to access a double sided floppy disk in drive0 (0&2) just boot NitrOS-9 from an image 
in drive1.
