That's why Ian didn't repro the FD501:

"I have seen:
WD1773, 74LS14 and 7416Ns all fail (and are all soldered FD-502, and on the FD501 only the 1773 and Prom are socketed). Moisture comes in through the air vents and damages the resistors directly below them (FD501), or damaged (along with the computer) due to lightning power strike.

At one point in time when I was buying up large numbers of CC FDCs to modify with DragonDOS I found 1 out of three I bought needed repairs. At the time I also watched, albeit temporarily, the prices of FD501s go over $100, then $120 then one went for $USD170 on eBay! This was when I began to think about repros. The FD502 seemed the best candidate because it has the fewest components and a 28-pin Eprom socket, meaning I could put in a different DOS with ease using a 2764.

Of course now the work is done, finding a supply of WD1773 at an economical price is turning out to be a big headache in keeping the price of this down.

Now I just need to run it up eBay's flagpole and see if anyone salutes it.... my first CC product.

Ian. "
