I may be a little behind here...

Have you checked with Roger Taylor with any of this? His RS232 pack used a
6551 and was very reliable, so he might have some insight as to the
problems you're facing. IIRC, Darren A. also helped a bit with the design.
This pack was the basis of his Bluetooth cart.

Around 2011, I was able to use XBee wireless modems with it and CocoNet -
worked very well and was very reliable. I also used off the shelf Chinese
BT modules as well.
