I just think they should be consistant. I have a bunch of stuff I
would like to find new homes for (not all computer, antique cameras,
military memorabilia, etc.) but I just don't feel like wasting my time
trying to make eBay work.

This is often a way used to reduce the cut that ebay gets of the sale fees as ebay doesn't charge fees on the handling charge.

I am not opposed to someone trying to get top dollar for what they are selling but put in a higher minimum starting bid. Don't ‎try to hide profit in an inflated shipping quote

Possibly eBay's concern was that you didn't quote the educational postal
rate that things like books and CDs qualify for. Saves quite a bit.
