That is what SDC-DOS does.

The SDC driver for NitrOS9 locates the SDC and FDC during the Init
routine.  Before exiting the Init routine it selects the FDC slot (if
found).  When called to perform I/O, the driver selects the SDC slot, but
saves and restores the original slot selection at entry and exit.
